The NetKad introduced recently by the Telecoms Department
(JTB) has turned out to be one of the biggest draws among
the local internet subscribers. Well over 50,000 cards
have been snapped up by subscribers within a matter of
days.
During a visit to the
'Netkad' booth at BITEX2000 yesterday, which was also
the last day of the computer exhibition, one of the
representatives from JTB informed the Bulletin that
cards are selling like hotcakes ever since it entered
the market few days ago.
"Since Netkad was
introduced, about 50,000 cards had been sold. These
are available at 50 agents including local computer
vendors in the country," he added.
Netkad is a prepaid card
that enables customers to log in the Internet without
having the hassle to open an account by subscribing
to BruNet.
It is also an additional
value-added service to the existing BruNet service and
customers will be able to access the Internet by using
their personal computer, modem and telephone line just
like the BruNet dial-up.
Many users of Netkads
commented that these provide an economical way to access
Internet in Brunei without having to subscribe to BruNet.
The prepaid cards also
help customers to limit their usage within their budget
allocation.
The popularity of the
NetKad is also evident in the online chat room for instance
in Brunei where it experiences an increase of chatters
that created a lag throughout the Internet Relay Chat
(IRC) session.
Netkad was officially
launched by the Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang
Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria
on September 2.
